Youth Good Grades Banquet

Last Friday, January 22nd, the Rock Youth had their 3rd Good Grades Banquet.

Let me explain what this is…We have two every school year so that we can honor the students in our youth group and after-school program for their had work in school. Youth who have As, Bs, or Cs on their report cards are invited to come. Someone might ask, “Are Cs good enough grades to get rewarded for?” Well, for some of our youth, Cs are good. A lot of our youth are failing multiple classes. If they can pull that F up to a C, we want to honor that.

We invited the families, the staff, and the youth volunteers. Over 30 people were there and Lisa and Clinton provided an incredible Mexican feast! Laura decorated the youth room…it looked awesome! We gave the youth a certificate, $10 gift card to Wal-Mart, a $5 gift card to dollar tree, and some other cool gifts. The youth were so pumped!

Out of a youth group of 40 middle school and high school students, we had only had seven who earned this award! That’s not very many! This tells me two important things:

1) The seven youth who earned are very special. They are overcoming the incredible odds that are stacked up against them. They are working hard even when many of their peers aren’t. They really deserve this.

2) The youth in our church and community need help! We need people to come and volunteer at our after-school program. I don’t need you, but the youth do. They need people to read with them…to sit with them and help them understand their homework. Many of our youth don’t try because they flat out don’t understand their work. Many of our kids speak English as a second language. They are still learning to read and write in English…Let me tell you this: Doing science and social studies is very difficult when you didn’t grow up in this country and when you don’t have a good grasp of the English language.

Another important thing to note is that over 10 youth had one grade that was off. They may have all As and Bs, and one D…or one F. I had to tell them they didn’t earn this award, but they are very close. They just need to work a bit harder and learn a bit more. An after-school volunteer could be that difference…keep that in mind!

*Our After-School Program is Monday-Friday from 3:30-5:30. We need volunteers for all aspects of our program:

-preparing meals (can be done anytime during the week)

-tutoring (only a 30-45 minute commitment)

-mentoring (spending time playing and hanging out with out youth and children)

-people to take on leadership in our program
